As the credit crunch continues to bite, a number of companies are looking to cut their IT security budgets but, according to IT Governance, the Ely-based IT tools and training specialist, this is the last thing firms should do. It's because of this that the firm has developed a BS 25999 standard implementation toolkit that it claims automates the process of meeting business continuity standards.

Business continuity is the term for a plan on how a company will recover - and restore - partially or completely interrupted critical functions following a disaster or extended disruption.

Most business continuity plans centre on a company's IT systems and how their function can be restored following a serious problem, BT 25999 - like all the British Standards - is designed to show customers and other firms that your organisation has achieved compliance with the standard.

For most firms, it's a confidence booster, and assures customers that the company they are dealing with is professional and well-run.

The BS 25999 toolkit is a downloadable package that is designed to simplify and speed up the process of ensuring compliance with the
British Standard.

According to IT Governance, its observations suggest that companies that follow the guidance contained in BS 25999 are much better placed to withstand an IT disaster.

The bad news, the firm says, is that the design and implementation of a BS 25999-business continuity system soaks up time like blotting paper - which is where the toolkit comes in.

The toolkit is billed as offering all the essential templates and tools to implement a business continuity management system that meets the BS 25999 specification.

It features a business impact analysis tool, guidance on how to test business continuity plans and all the tools (and templates) needed to meet the documentation requirements of the standard.

If your firm has to meet standards as part of its customer contracts, then the toolkit could be an interesting option...
